NOCD is best known for OCD treatment. We specialize in exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy, the most effective, evidence-based treatment for OCD, with research showing that about 80% of people experience significant symptom reduction.

But our care goes beyond OCD. “At NOCD, we assess for and treat anxiety and related disorders as well as depression, as these are some of the most common mental health issues faced in the United States, with about 19% of the population identified as having these mental health conditions,” says Tracie Ibrahim, LMFT, CST, NOCD’s Chief Compliance Officer. “Anxiety and depressive disorders are also commonly co-occurring in people who have OCD.”

That’s why, in addition to anxiety disorders and depression, our therapists are trained to treat conditions that often occur alongside or are related to OCD, including BFRBs, tic disorders, hoarding, BDD, and C-PTSD.

Here’s a clear look at what we treat, how we treat it, and where we set limits so that people can get the right kind of care.

OCD and anxiety disorders

OCD often overlaps with other anxiety disorders—in fact, research shows that many people with OCD also meet the criteria for at least one anxiety disorder. At NOCD, therapists use ERP—the most effective therapy for OCD—and adapt it for related anxiety conditions such as:

ERP is a specialized form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) proven to be effective for OCD. General CBT, if not tailored for OCD, can sometimes be unhelpful or even worsen symptoms.

Other approaches that may support treatment include:

These methods are typically used in conjunction with ERP therapy, tailored to the individual’s specific needs.

For severe or treatment-resistant OCD, additional options may include:

  • Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs)
  • Partial hospital programs (PHPs)
  • Residential treatment centers (RTCs)
  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
  • Deep brain stimulation (DBS)
  • Gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS)

Interoceptive exposure—a type of CBT–may also be used to treat anxiety disorders to target fear of physical sensations.

BFRBs and tic disorders

Some people with OCD also have repetitive behaviors or tics. These conditions are distinct from OCD but can benefit from the evidence-based therapy known as habit reversal training (HRT):

  • BFRBs like trichotillomania (hair pulling), excoriation disorder (skin picking), and others
  • Tic disorders

Hoarding disorder

Hoarding disorder shares some overlap with OCD, but is considered its own disorder. NOCD Therapists use CBT and the Four-Box Method to help people make decisions about possessions and reduce distress.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)

BDD, or body dysmorphia or dysmorphophobia, involves excessive worry about perceived flaws in appearance. Unlike OCD, ERP is not the primary therapy for BDD. Instead, NOCD Therapists use CBT for BDD, which targets the thoughts and behaviors that keep body image concerns going.

Depression

Depression commonly co-occurs with OCD. NOCD Therapists integrate CBT elements into treatment plans to help people address both intrusive thoughts and the mood-related challenges that come with depression. This dual approach makes recovery more sustainable.

Chronic PTSD (C-PTSD)

While NOCD does not treat all forms of PTSD, some of our therapists are trained to treat chronic PTSD (PTSD) using prolonged exposure (PE) therapy. PE is evidence-based and helps people gradually process trauma memories in a safe, structured way.

How NOCD assesses and matches Members to care

Every Member completes a comprehensive assessment before therapy.

This includes:

  • Screening tools to help identify related or co-occurring conditions.
  • Specialist matching, so members are paired with therapists trained to treat their specific needs (e.g., BDD, hoarding, C-PTSD).

If multiple specialties are needed, Members may work with more than one NOCD Therapist to ensure they’re fully supported.
